Vacation Aftermath: How to get back into a healthy routine

Good Monday Morning!

After a week off, it’s definitely good to be back.  As much as I loved every single indulgent moment of last week’s vacation, I’m always ready to get back into my routine after a few days of unhealthy occurrences.

Please don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed myself fully and don’t feel a single ounce of guilt, but I also know that I’m able to put myself right back on track after repeated drinking, eating, and lounging.

Although I tried to make conscious decisions while on vacation, I also didn’t hold back. I normally wouldn’t be drinking a mojitio at 11am on a weekday (only on certain occasions ;) nor would I opt for such big meals, but I wasn’t going to miss out on a wonderful time because of my preconceived healthy lifestyle.  The resort did have a gym and I found myself working out for about an hour almost every day but I didn’t want to spend my entire time on a treadmill either.  I tried to find a time to workout that wouldn’t take away from spending time with Toly or our friends so that meant first thing in the morning.

As for drinking, I tried to limit myself.  Of course I partook in a few drinks but I also never got completely wasted.  As delicious as the frozen and mixed drinks are, I knew I would be an absolute mess if I downed 5 or 6 Pina Coladas.  During the day, I would stick with vodka sodas with a splash of grapefruit juice.  It was refreshing and kept me feeling relaxed and happy.  I made sure that I was consuming tons of water so for every mixed drink, I would alternate with a club soda with lime.  At night, I opted for wine and maybe a tequila shot or two. When in Rome!

 

In the end, I walked away from this vacation feeling fully content and as though I experienced everything I intended to.  I feel like too many people beat themselves up after going a little overboard in their getaways; however, the worst thing you can do is feel ashamed because it often leads to stress and a decline in motivation to get back into the healthy swing of things.

So you may ask, how exactly do you get back into it?

Start with your eating

I’m not sure about you, but after a week of indulgent meals, I crave simple and fresh foods. Big bowls of yogurt or cottage cheese with fresh fruit and granola have been a great start to my mornings.

Lunches have been pretty lackluster but still delicious and definitely nutritious. Eggs, spinach and turkey lunch meat is what I’ve been enjoying mid afternoon.

As for dinner, I took the opportunity to replenish my vegetable intake.  Nothing makes me feel more refreshed than a plate of baked fish and vegetables.  Last night, I made my Oven Roasted Cod with Roasted Vegetables, a favorite that is so easy to make, hearty and incredibly tasty.

 

Work It Out

It’s true, exercise not only helps us recover, it sparks energy and motivation.  The first day I got back, the first thing I did was hit the gym. I didn’t give myself any time to make an excuse and just got right back into it.

And just because you spent the past 7 days lying in the sun, doesn’t mean you need to spend countless hours sweating it out as a way to make up for your relaxation.  Even just a 20 minute workout can bring some life back into your system.  This past weekend, I’ve been focusing on my core as I tend to feel the best when I get that burning sensation in my abs.

Plan your next vacation

I’m not sure about you, but I get really depressed when I come home from an amazing vacation.  Reality is hard to face when you reward yourself with a tropical escape, but there is no need to waste your time feeling sad, just start thinking about your next much deserved break.  It could be just a weekend trip someplace this winter, or even a day trip in the next few weeks, but having another jaunt to look forward to will keep you focused.  We all deserve a break so be sure to keep these things on your schedule.

Hey Lady! Ugh – I totally know that feeling. Awful! But you just have to think of the next thing to look forward to. The Holidays!! :)

Anyway, I never got to comment on your post about leaving your full time job. I stopped blogging for a while, which meant I also stopped reading blogs. It’s funny, because my Mom follows a few of the blogs I’ve told her about in the past and she actually e-mailed me when you had posted about leaving your job! I am so happy for you! I know how hard it is to work for yourself and keep motivated – but I know you will succeed! Best of luck and I look forward to catching up on your posts now that my life has settled down a bit!!

I think it is great that our bodies tend to crave healthier food after a week of not-so-healthy indulging. I just wish that my body craved exercise in the same way! I completely agree that getting back into exercise is crucial, but it sometimes feels so difficult after a week off. I suspect that keeping up with that time in the gym while on vacation was very useful for more than just burning calories while on vacation!

Sounds like we are in the same place! As much as I loved indulging on vacay last week, I couldn’t imagine doing that everyday! A week of eating and drinking whatever I wanted was exactly what I needed to get extra motivated! The first workout back felt SO good and I couldn’t wait to eat a salad. Glad you had a good time – I can’t wait to do another all inclusive!
