My Workout Routine Now and Moving Forward

by Lauren on January 10, 2013

It has been awhile since I’ve posted a workout.

Not that I haven’t been working out, I just haven’t shared any of my workouts in quite some time.  Seeing that this blog encompasses a mix of healthy recipes, insights, and yes…fitness, I thought it was about time I provided a little update into my current workout routine.

I recently revealed that for the past few months, I’ve been enjoying a nice balance of exercise routines, and right now, I’m loving (and apparently so is my body) the schedule I’ve adjusted to.

Here is what it looks like…..

Monday- Long Run – 9-10 miles

Tuesday - Run – 5-6 miles + abs/light upper body

Wednesday – Run – 5-6 miles + abs/ light lower body

Thursday – Full Body Strength + 60 min RPM (teaching)

Friday – Run 2-3 miles + 60 min RPM (teaching)

Sunday – Body pump + yoga

That is what is working for ME right now and at this time in my life.  Like I said, I’ve adapted to this routine and my body has really shown improvements in so many areas.

BUT guess what?  All of this means nothing starting next week.  Once I move to Chicago, I have absolutely no idea what my life schedule will look like, therefore, I have no idea what my fitness routine will be.  And, for the first time in my life, I’m 100% okay with that.

I’ve already reached out to some gyms in the area I’ll be living and hope to find one to teach cycle classes from.  I’m also scouting out a yoga studio to continue with my resolution of taking more yoga classes.  I do know my apartment complex has a gym, which is very convenient, but again, my work schedule is going to be nothing like it is now, so I’ll have to adapt and fit it in when I can.

Last year, I made a promise to myself that I would let go of unhealthy routine and I can honestly tell you, I’ve done just that.  I love working out, I love to run, and I love to teach, but I also love to live my life for the incredible experiences that occur.  For too long, I was ignoring these moments because I was all too confined in MY routine where I was comfortable and grounded.

I’m actually looking forward to a little break from my current schedule and I think my body will appreciate it too.  Who knows what will come out of the next few months, but no matter what happens, I know I’ll be ready for it!

And with all of that, now I finally have a workout for you!

This is one I’ve been doing on rotation for the past few months before I teach my Thursday morning RPM class and I love it!  It’s a great full body workout, but forces me to get some significant upper body work in.

Question:

Have you had to adapt to a new workout routine and how did you handle the change?

Goodness knows that I’ve had my fair share of adapting my workouts this past year. It’s been a crazy ride and one that I never thought I’d have to go through, but it sure taught me a lot and just allowed me to realize that there’s so much MORE to life than just my workouts. Recovering from HA, being pregnant, and then getting back into shape after my pregnancy have and will teach me so much. I think your attitude about all of the upcoming changes in your life is awesome girl! xoxo

And being a mom…I’m sure that is going to be the biggest (but most rewarding) of them all! :)

Take it from a former couch potato, starting a routine is much harder than maintaining one. I have a routine for the first time in my life and I can’t believe how much easier it is to get my butt moving now that I have one. I actually missed it over the holidays when life got in the way of getting to the gym. I think the biggest help to adapting to the routine was to realize that the workout could be fun and not punishment. If I’m not feeling the eliptical today, that’s okay. I can bike or use the treadmill instead. The point is to do something and now that I’ve given myself the freedom to alter the routine when the mood strikes and actually focus on the exercises I enjoy, it’s much more fullfilling. Good luck in Chicago. I can’t wait to read about all your great experiences there.

Couple questions – Did you mean pike crunches? Also, when you say repeat again for 3 reps, did you mean repeat again for 3 SETS or are you only doing 2 sets- one of 12 reps and one of 3?

Lauren January 10, 2013 at 2:04 pm

Oh my- yes I did mean pike. Thank you! And yep, you do 3 sets of 12 reps. Wow, it has been so long since I wrote out a workout – I’m rusty! :)

Jenny@thewellnessjourneyblog January 10, 2013 at 2:09 pm

Gotcha! I thought maybe pipes were some newfandangled thing I hadn’t heard of yet. :-)

Thanks!

Having always had a full time job, moving cities twice, balancing my marriage – I can say I’ve had some changes that many people face. You just make it work – I try not to stress out or put extra pressure on myself. I grew up in Chicago, you’ll love it there. The winters aren’t really that bad, especially this one (pretty mild). Question for you – how do you plan on handling a long distance marriage (not to pry to much, but was long distance with my now-husband). Thanks!

Lauren January 10, 2013 at 2:07 pm

Kudos to you Colleen! It’s never easy making huge life changes, but if you are like me, you might thrive off of them. My hubby and I have been together since we were 17 years old. Most people don’t realize that. We support each other in all areas of our lives, and even though the distance will be hard, it’s such a trivial amount of time in comparison to the bigger picture. It’s often easy to look at things such as how is this going to affect my life here and now, but if you can look beyond that and realize truly why you are doing it, it’s a much more approachable way to look at it.

Colleen January 10, 2013 at 2:39 pm

I’ve been with my husband since we were 18 – and I can say that absence definitely makes the heart grow fonder. Good luck to you!

This schedule does not exactly scream “letting go” or a more relaxed approach to exercise. What it does scream is exercise obsession or anorexia athletica. This is no way to recover from HA, and you know it. You have a problem. Please get some help.

Anonymous January 10, 2013 at 2:51 pm

I’m sad to say but these sentiments were EXACTLY what I was thinking when I was reading this post. Seems like you you have an eating disorder you don’t want to face. Your food postings and exercises are out of control for a normal person, let alone a person that wants to recover from HA and have a baby. Furthermore, your blog is really a bad example of “healthy living”. You are have a negative influence on your readers by continuing to post your twisted views.

Jess January 12, 2013 at 7:50 pm

I completely agree with Lauren and Anonymous. I guess it’s your business if you want to exercise this much, but you can’t position yourself as a health and wellness coach for the larger public. For heaven’s sake – as a recovering anorexic – I didn’t work that much in the WORST of times. Do your thing, but please don’t suggest that is a normal or healthy approach to exercise. There should be at least one rest day in there.

Erica @ For the Sake of Cake January 10, 2013 at 5:02 pm

I’ve had to adapt my normal workout routine a bit since beginning training for the Disney Princess Half. I’m so excited for the race, but I think I’ll feel relieved when it’s done and I won’t have the pressure to run… or to run for a certain distance.

Lauren January 11, 2013 at 12:16 pm

You’ll do so great with your half Erica! But I do know what you mean, sometimes not having a training plan is so nice.

Claire @ Health Nut Claire January 10, 2013 at 6:14 pm

Dang girl, you need to rest one of those days!! Good luck in Chicago–I love that place!

Sarah January 11, 2013 at 8:40 am

No rest day= obsessed. Im sorry- you really need to be honest about things. I would be willing to bet SO Much if you gained weight and cooled off exercising you’d be pregnant. That’s a no brainer.

Ali January 11, 2013 at 9:37 am

I have to step in here. After dealing with my own issues with infertility, to have people commenting “if you did this—-then you would be pregnant” is hurtful and disgusting. You have no idea what it feels like to be told it is your fault, and it is in no way helpful to point out what we have been told by doctors, and what we have explored ourselves. Take a step back and don’t be so quick to judge or be critical. Infertility is painful enough as it is, and no one needs the food and exercise police nitpicking at behavior choices.

Lauren January 11, 2013 at 12:12 pm

Thank you so much Ali. Your words are so kind and I appreciate your support so much! xoxo

laura January 11, 2013 at 8:25 pm

I agree. Not exercising (or significantly decreasing exercise) and gaining weight is NOT a cure-all for infertility issues. You can also struggle with infertility issues and NOT have HA or a BMI that is considered below average. People are so quick to judge and offer their unsolicited advice. Cutting back on exercise/gaining weight does NOT equal pregnancy. UGH much more complicated than that!

I’m excited to hear about your journey, Lauren! I hope you will fill us in as you are learning and adjusting to your new schedule in Chicago!

Alanna January 11, 2013 at 11:05 am

I’m honestly not trying to be rude so I hope you don’t take it that way, but do you think it is safe/healthy to not take any rest days? Sometimes I feel I have the time and energy to work out every day of a week and I don’t just because I feel like I HAVE to take a rest day. Just curious about your input on that topic!

Lauren January 11, 2013 at 12:11 pm

I DO take rest days. One FULL day of rest a week, at least. The routine I posted is a bit heavy, which I admited, but there was one day of rest, I just think it was overlooked. Yes, yes! Rest days are so important. I definitely believe in at least one, if not two full days of rest.

Vanessa January 11, 2013 at 2:27 pm

I need to chime in here against some of these negative comments. I too was diagnosed with HA after attempting to get pregnant with my second child. It was stressful and terrible, and comments such as “if you do ____, then you will end up pregnant”, are not helpful. Often times these things are just beyond our control. Listening to comments such as the ones posted above only add to the stress and emotions that accompany infertility, which are already enough for a woman to handle.

Lauren – you know what works for you and your body, and I hope you keep that self assurance. I will share that with some minor exercise changes and lifestyle changes, I have resumed a normal cycle! Best of luck with your move and your new job.

Lauren January 11, 2013 at 2:35 pm

Thank you Vanessa! Blessing to you and your family. :)

Lauren January 11, 2013 at 4:56 pm

Denial is the hardest thing to overcome within ourselves, and honesty is so liberating. I send you love and support. One of my favorite doctors always said “Awareness…Acceptance…Action!” She stressed that each step in that process can take days, months, years. Start with awareness. Xoxo.

Sarah January 11, 2013 at 9:23 pm

I have to wonder where this most over used blog phrase ” you know your body- you know whats best for your body ” crap came from. As a medical professional- I will tell you first hand that is ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE! Everyone does NOT know whats best for their body. Everyone is in Control of their body but that does not mean they know whats best. Sorry that is just a dumb sentiment. People harm their bodies ALL the time. In the end its their choice though

Sarah January 11, 2013 at 9:30 pm

Lauren- Im not saying you’re “harming” your body or anything of that nature. But just in general- I hate when people use that phrase in the blog world- bc its a load of crap. I ‘ m sorry you’re having fertility issues- that’s honestly a nightmare. Best of luck!

Emily @ Hungry Delights January 15, 2013 at 2:11 am

I am still trying to work out the best exercise schedule for me… I have been doing too much and my body is exhausted from it. I am planning to reduce my exercise to only 5 days a week from now on – I look forward to seeing how your workout schedule changes with your big move :)
