Weekend Highlights: Parties, Yoga and Revolving Sushi

by Lauren on January 28, 2013

Hello friends!

Here we are again, the start of a brand new week.  It’s been a busy but very fulfilling weekend on my end and now that I find myself a little more grounded in this new city, I’m excited to begin to establish a little routine this week.

This past weekend was a nice mix of work, play, and fun.  Work is going fabulous and I’m really loving the people.  Last night, I attended our staff holiday party and met so many fantastic coworkers and new friends.  I know I keep saying this, but I feel so lucky to be surrounded by so many friendly people here. It just keeps getting better.

Although I kept things pretty low key last night, I still had the WORST night and morning due to some stomach issues.  Unfortunately, I thought it would be a good idea to taste a few bites of what was acclaimed to be some of the best deep dish Chicago pizza.  I should have known.  Me and pizza have an ugly relationship and my stomach revolts against any cow’s milk cheese, especially mozzarella. A few bites was all it took and I was in awful pain all night long.  No fun.

Aside from the party, I also had a chance to check out an incredible hot yoga sculpt class with a new friend and reader, Kate.  I mentioned that I’ve been looking for yoga classes out here and I think I may have found my new calling.  Hot yoga is delicious!  I’ve never taken a hot yoga class before and wasn’t all to sure what to expect.  I went into it thinking, “I don’t really sweat that much, and I love the heat, so it can’t be that bad.”  HOLY CRAP was I wrong!  After 60 minutes of intense heated yoga, I was drenched.  I’m not even kidding, full on soaked to the core.

Saturday was a welcomed surprise when I found out I had the day off work.  With no plans, I decided to reach out to my girl Mara to see if she happened to be free as well.  Lucky for me, she was and we quickly made plans for a girls day.

This is the second time in a week I’ve hung out with Mara and we’ve done almost the exact same thing twice now.  It’s become a tradition and we are both 100% okay with our routine.

It goes like this…sushi, shopping, fro-yo.

First up, a sushi lunch.  Mara told me about a great sushi place right near us that does a convey belt of sushi.  You sit at the bar and pick your rolls from the rotating table in front of you.  I’ve seen this concept in movies before but never did I think it actually existed.

Let me just say, this is the BEST way to eat sushi.  Each plate is a different color and each has a few pieces of a selected roll.

The plates are different colors and each color represents the price.  You pick your plate from the moving belt, eat and set the plate aside.  At the end, they tally up the plates for your total.

Mara and I had way too much fun with this.

It doesn’t seem like a lot at first, but I think we managed to eat a few dozen pieces of sushi when all was said and done.

Feeling entirely stuffed, we then moved along to our next adventure, shopping and manicures.

Again, I have way too much fun with this girl.

After a few hours of digesting, it was time for fro yo!

I know I said Red Mango was my favorite, but I think this place takes reign.  Bamboo Spoon was out of this world!  The Carmel Frappuccino frozen yogurt was down right incredible!

What a fantastic Saturday and all together wonderful weekend.

Hope you all enjoyed yours as well.

Question:

Important: When eating fro yo, do you go for fruity or chocolatey?

Ugh, I’m sorry to hear about your tummy troubles! :( I’m glad the sushi and fro yo seemed to make up for it though! Can’t go wrong with those foods! As for fro yo, I usually go the chocolate-y route. Every once in awhile if it’s super hot and I’m craving something extra refreshing, I’ll go for a fruity/coconut combo though.

Conveyor belt sushi is the greatest idea ever! I can never decide and seeing it would absolutely solve my problem! Especially at restaurants that don’t list descriptions for what is in the rolls!!!!

What a fun weekend! Love the looks of that sushi place and of course the froyo too.

Ah! I love, love heated yoga! When you come back to PA, you should check out Yoga on Chocolate in Hershey! It’s awesome!

Hope the tummy is 100% better! Bummer about feeling yucky! I LOVE hot yoga! I have a 5 pack right now and I’m savoring every class.

Will be you blogging about how the time away from your husband and your house is going?

Jenny@thewellnessjourneyblog January 28, 2013 at 2:36 pm

I’d actually love to hear what the internship entails specifically! What is it that you’re taking away from it? What do they have you doing?

Lauren January 28, 2013 at 4:32 pm

Hi Jenny! I would love to share more details about the experience and will do so in a post eventually. Right now, I’m still getting grounded with everything so once I have a better perspective to share, I definitely will. :)

Okay I don’t often eat sushi (partly out of the unknown of what I’m eating), partly because it doesn’t always leave me feeling well BUT I do really like it (at least some). And despite being from this area, I have no idea where to go for good sushi – we may have to go there! And then get froyo! ;)

Done! :)

LOVE YOU!!!!!
One day, we should have a “make your own” sushi day! You in?

Lauren January 28, 2013 at 4:31 pm

Ummm…let me think about it….YES!!! ;)

Oooooh yikes with the pizza! Yeah, deep dish is about as cheesy as you can get your pizza, which is definitely a bummer for you with your digestive woes because I’m quite sure I’ve never had pizza better than Chicago deep dish. Ah well, I’d say you made up for it with the sushi and frozen yogurt! I’m DEFINITELY a chocolate person when it comes to frozen yogurt (and dessert in general). I always load up on all the chocolate/candy/cookie/other dessert-y goodness available at a frozen yogurt shop, but I make sure to balance it out with blueberries so it can be healthy ;) Pretty sure all those antioxidants completely cancel out anything potentially not-great for you in all my toppings, right? Right. Glad we agree :P

I’m so glad that you loved hot yoga! You really don’t think you will sweat that much but it kicks your booty!

Carly @ Snack Therapy January 28, 2013 at 4:39 pm

What a bummer about your stomach problems! That seriously sucks! That froyo looks beyond amazing though. Sushi + shopping + froyo = perfection.

Erica @ For the Sake of Cake January 28, 2013 at 4:57 pm

That sushi place looks like fun! Ah, I haven’t had good sushi in a long time… probably since the blogger meet-up at Fusion! I’ve had sushi since then, just not GREAT sushi!

Kate January 28, 2013 at 5:19 pm

Yeaaa! So excited I made it to the blog :) I am glad you loved yoga, I sure did build it up enough. Looking forward to our next date!

Danielle @ itsaharleyyylife January 28, 2013 at 7:41 pm

I love all of your Chicago posts! It looks like you are having such a great time! I so want to find one of those revolving sushi places one day! So neat!

Emily @ Hungry Delights January 28, 2013 at 10:04 pm

Yay for girl days – looks like a tradition in the making! In Australia – I think the majority of sushi restaurants are, in fact, sushi trains (as in conveyor belts). They are super fun!

When it comes to fro-yo, I definitely tend to go more with chocolate and/or peanut butter. Don’t get me wrong, I love fruit, but I just cannot go without at least SOME chocolate.

Traci January 29, 2013 at 1:34 pm

We have a sushi conveyor belt restaurant nearby and it the BEST. Although I agree, I end up eating more because it’s just too much fun to grab different things off the belt. Froyo-wise, I tend to go the chocolate/cake batter route, but I do love plain tart yogurt with fruit in the summer. Sounds like your internship is going well and would love to hear more about it, good luck!

Melissa @TryingtoHeal January 29, 2013 at 9:13 pm

Ah, isn’t Mara awesome! I love spending time with her! Glad you two had a great time!

Lauren January 30, 2013 at 3:36 pm

Agreed!! :)
