January 31st….seriously?
There is no denying it, 2013 has been one incredibly transformative year for me, and we are only one month in. It’s amazing to note the amount of changes that have taken place over the past 31 days, but when it comes down to it, every single one has been a personal, professional and spiritual growth in the right direction.
I looked back on my goal for this month, and while I didn’t really set specific tasks, I did vow to one universal resolution. That being to take each moment as it comes, to value every opportunity that presents itself, and to never look back or question in self-doubt.
So how is that going so far?
Well, quite well actually. I know it’s still rather new, but adjusting to this new life has been easy for me. Ever since the opportunity presented itself to move to Chicago, I always just felt something in my gut that was telling me it was the right decision. I don’t know if you’ve ever felt called to something so strongly, but I have, and when you are able to put aside your own fears and doubts and trust that the path you are being led is the right one, it’s a beautiful release.
So January, you’ve been a good month but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t ready to push one more winter month aside in anticipation for some warmer weather and the idea of spring in this new city.
With that all being said, here are this month’s superlatives:

My Detox Week: 3 Healthy Salad Recipes to Get Back on Track
With the overindulgence of the holidays behind me, I was feeling more than ready to get myself back into some clean eating and healthy habits. In this post, I shared a few of my easy and approachable detox methods as well as three delicious salad recipes to start the new year off right.
Best Event Post:
Today’s Agriculture and the 97th PA Farm Show
This was the 4th PA Bloggers Meet Up event that I organized and probably the best yet. I worked with PennAg Industries to put together a fantastic VIP Blogger Tour of the Today’s Agriculture exhibit at the PA Farm Show. We learned about Pennsylvania agriculture, sustainable farming practices, and of course, ate delicious local farm fare.

My Workout Routine Now and Moving Forward
Oh boy, everyone loves a little controversy and it seems the moment I even write the work “workout” on this blog, the haters come out of hiding and feel the need to offer their {heartfelt} opinions. Really, it doesn’t bother me, but I always claim to reveal honesty on this page so that is what you’ll get. I did share a nice 45 minute bootcamp workout that I think got a little overlooked so here it is again in case you missed it.

Reflection: My Personal Battle with Infertility
This was one of the most difficult but freeing things I’ve written in awhile. I finally opened up about my 2 year struggle with infertility and was blown away by the love and support I received from doing so. Just another reason why I think it’s so important to share your strengths and weaknesses – it not only humbles you, it makes you realize that there are so many others who benefit from it.

The Final Meal: Beet, Blood Orange, and Avocado Salmon Salad
Basically, everything I love in this world on one plate. This was my last meal that I cooked in PA and I’m still reminiscing about it’s glory.

Chicago Updates
After a few days of transitioning, I gave a quick recap of the first week in Chi-town. Aside from the necessary work tasks, I had a blast hanging out with some of my very dear friends. Lots of laughs, good meals and fro-yo was had.
February Goals:
And this brings us to my goals for February. I’m purposely keeping my aspirations light thing month, knowing I’ll be overwhelmed with a heavy work load.
- Get More Acclimated In The City- Even though I’m living in a suburb of Chicago, I’m lucky that I get to work out of the city almost everyday. I’m still trying to get my bearings, but I really want to experience so much more. I’ve become comfortable with my current surroundings, but I want to branch out and venture into the small towns that surround the heart of the city. There is SO MUCH, it’s a little overwhelming, but I’m ready to see and do more!
- Open a Bank Account and Start a Budget- Now that I have my work schedule and I’m back on a consistent paycheck status, I need to find a bank out here and start managing my incomes. It’s been a little in flux so far, but I’m determined to get organized with this in the next few weeks. I need to set a budget as well for things like gas, rent, groceries, and going out. Granted I was waiting until I had a handle on my working situation but now I feel comfortable to lay it all out and follow through.
- Do Hot Yoga Every Chance I Get – I’m sort of in love with hot yoga now. There are some fantastic studios in the city but I’d like to find something a little closer to my apartment.
- See a a Local Band- You all know how much I love music and seeing good bands. I know there are tons of great local spots that have good music, I just need to look into it and go. (Side note- if any local Chicago readers know of any upcoming shows that sound good, please share!)
- Take a Wine Class – Now that I’m helping to manage a wine bar, my love for wine is only growing. As much of an enthusiast that I am, I really want to spend a little time expanding my knowledge. Wine is always evolving but there is a beautiful concept behind the art of drinking vino. I want to be able to preach what I practice.
Well so much for keeping it light I suppose. Oh well, these are goals I hope to accomplish while I’m here in Chicago so if they all aren’t made by the end of the month, I’m okay with that.
February, let’s do this!
Question:
What is one of your goals for next month?

Okay, first of all – I owe you an email so we can find a chance to meet and hang out! Second, one of my good friends from college is in a band and I keep promising him I’ll go see them someday (a check off your february goals?). He’s a great songwriter and musician so I don’t think they’ll let us down. Third, despite growing up in the Chicagoland area, I know NYC, LA and Boston better. Going back to my first point, maybe we can tackle this together.
Hey Katie! Yes! We really do need to make plans soon. Email me asap and let’s make that happen. I would love to hear more about your brother’s band!
GREAT review! I love your salads. I want one every night for dinner. Can I hire you to come be my personal chef
Fun goals! I like the idea of seeing a local band. My goals: work on my step form, more play dates for kay, RELAX, spend more time with Josh
One of my goals is also to start doing hot yoga every chance I get. Lol. I’m completely obsessed an probably annoying all of my friends and family by talking about it always. When you are back in the area join me at Yoga on Chocolate. So awesome!
I would love to Brittany! I didn’t know Yoga on Chocolate had hot yoga. Good to know!
Great goals girl! I haven’t even thought about goals for February… It snuck up on me so quickly! I’m thinking just getting ready for baby and following the goals in my “happiness project” will keep me busy enough.
I’m from Northwest Indiana (about 40 minutes outside of Chicago), although I relocated to Texas this past June as my husband is in the military. Definitely check out a Cubs game this Spring/Summer! They may not be the best baseball team, but Wrigleyville is always a fun place to visit. The museums, aquarium, Navy Pier, Willis (formerly Sears) Tower, are all work checking out. Obviously the shopping and restaurants are great, and you’ve gone to some places that I had not even heard of- so thank you! Look forward to reading more about your adventures there
I am so honored to be a part of your Best Event Post for January! Love your 2013 goal of living in the moment and being present. This is something that I am always reminding myself. Seems as though you are having a great time in Chicago. Hope many more great opportunities arise for you while in Chicago!
Have you figured out your direction in the city? That was the HARDEST, but knowing the lake is to the East helps.
My friend is in a folky/bluegrass band that plays in the Northern suburbs if you’re ever interested!
Hi Katie! I’m still trying to figure out my sense of direction, but I’m getting better. I live in the Northwest suburbs and I would LOVE to hear more about your friend’s band!
Yay! I’ll let you know! I would also love to meet up for a fitness class if you decide to try any new ones!
I am having such fun following your Chicago adventures! Please go to the Signature lounge at the top of the Hancock for a drink — I miss doing that! xo
Ooo that sounds lovely! How did I not know about this?
Gah! You didn’t know! You must go! It’s on the 97th floor and has the most amazing views.
I second that! My bf was in Chicago for business a month ago and just raved about that place! The pics looked amazing!
I think a wine class sounds like so much fun, and I became seriously addicted to hot yoga the first time I tried it. One of my goals for this year is to continue to blog/connect with all the lovely people in the blog community.
