It’s been awhile hasn’t it?
While I promise I’ve still been reading so many of your wonderful blogs, I myself have been awful at finding time to write. As I said before, there are so many things to be said about Chicago, especially the food scene and it is my desire to continue to blog about these experiences. I just need to make more of a point to do so.
Luckily, I do have a restaruant review to share so let’s get to it.
A few months ago, a friend of mine told me about a new place opening in Lincoln Park that was owned by one of his good friends. Johnny’s Beef and Gyro just opened its second location in the Chicago area and serves up authentic fast Greek food to many seeking locals.
Johnny himself reached out to me last week to see if I would like to come in and check it out so I rounded up a few friends and made a lunch date out of it.
Johnny’s Beef and Gyro is what you’d probably expect from a quick, fast food inspired lunch spot. The large menu sits high above the counter, the high top tables are perfect for a place to sit and chow down on your lunch break, and the vibe is similar to a pizza shop with self-serve soda and condiment stations. But don’t be fooled by the atmosphere because what truly sets this place a part from your typical fast food joint is the authenticity and type of cuisine they offer.
Everything is fresh and made in house and many of the items are healthy or can be modified.
Per Jonny’s recommendations, we started with some fresh warm pita, hummus and tazaki.
It was delicious! The hummus had to have been a red pepper which is my favorite and the tazaki was spot on. I always expect pita bread to be amazing in a Greek restaurant but there are times when you can never be sure. Luckily, this pita was perfect. Warm, chewy and thick, just the way pita should be.
For my entree, I ordered the Greek salad with grilled salmon. I always love a good Greek salad and this one was definitely up to par. The marinated feta cheese, the salty kalamata olives and the crisp veggies made this classic stand out. The salmon was perfectly cooked and a nice addition for a good healthy protein option.
My friends ordered their burger, which comes highly recommended and a classic gyro. Both were said to be wonderful.
Aside from the food being great, Johnny himself was a joy to be around. You can tell immediately that this family run business is a passion. Johnny spent a few minutes chatting with us and telling us all about how he started.
If you are looking for a fast, delicious and healthy lunch in Lincoln Park, definitely check out Jonny’s Beef and Gyro. And if you happen to find yourself there on a Friday, you’ll be rewarded with a cookie, just because.
A huge thanks to Johnny for having us!
